MURBS’ new Mandatory status is joyfully being referred to as the MURBS “New Dispensation”. Having known the difficulties MURBS had faced earlier in telling who was their member and who wasn’t, we all rejoiced upon attaining the new status that brought all employees of Makerere University into MURBS. However, I had to cut my jubilations short and focused on the new challenges that were coming along with the new status. I knew that it meant that MURBS had to re-think her strategies in all areas in order to serve members of MURBS that had doubled overnight to over 6,000. The new dispensation not only increased the member contributions, benefits paid and operational expenses, but it also came along with qualitative challenges, such as, the need for a larger Board and a larger Secretariat; the need to review policy procedures; and the need to review efficiency in the investment of Scheme funds. I wondered how quickly MURBS would transition into the new dispensation. I am happy to note that a year later, MURBS is rapidly changing the contents of her wardrobe in order to discard what cannot fit into its new Mandatory status and replace them with those that are compatible.
