Who is a Member?

The Makerere University Retirement Benefits Scheme (MURBS) is a retirement benefits scheme for the staff of Makerere University. Membership includes:

a) All employees of Makerere University: Every employee becomes a member of the Scheme from their date of appointment.

b) Transferred Benefits: Employees whose benefits have been transferred to MURBS and remain vested in the Scheme are also considered members.

As of June 30, 2023, MURBS had a total membership of 8,229, with 3,041 being active member.


Member Rights

1. Information

  • Right to receive benefit statements showing all accrued benefits. These are available on the MIS portal throughout the year.
  • Right to receive the Annual Report of the Scheme, including Audited Financial Statements, at no cost.
  • Right to access the Scheme’s policy documents, such as the Investment Policy, and to be informed about the Scheme’s affairs and any changes within it.

2. Contributions

  • Right to membership of MURBS upon appointment by Makerere University, with contributions starting from the date of employment.
  • Right to assign and deposit Additional Voluntary Contributions with MURBS.

3. Benefits Access

  • Right to access retirement benefits when due.

4. Whistleblowing and Complaints Escalation

  • Right to disclose any unusual occurrences in confidence to the Board of Trustees.
  • Right to file a complaint with the Authority for investigation, as per the URBRA Complaints Handling Guidelines 2020.

5. Nomination of Trustees

  • Right to elect representatives to the Board of Trustees of MURBS through the appropriate Staff Association.

Member Obligations

  • Register with the Scheme and nominate beneficiaries in the event of death.
  • Make every effort to understand Scheme documentation, especially the Trust Deed and Scheme Rules.
  • Seek guidance from the MURBS Secretariat or Trustees on any unclear matters or disputes.
  • Participate in Member education programs, briefing sessions, and other activities upon invitation.
  • Provide accurate and timely information as required by the Scheme Rules.
  • Conduct themselves with decorum and respect when dealing with MURBS staff and appointed agents.
  • Adhere to obligations under the URBRA Act, 2011, and related regulations. The URBRA Act, 2011, can be accessed here.

To keep your biodata updated and stay informed, please follow these steps:

  • Complete the Bio Data Form.
  • Attach a copy of your National ID.
  • Expatriates can submit a copy of their Passport
  • Send the completed form and ID copy to the MURBS email at info@murbs.mak.ac.ug, or
  • Submit the form to the Scheme Office at Lincoln Flats B4, Makerere University.

Have you saved with MURBS for over 10 years? You have the option to assign a portion of your retirement benefits solely for securing a mortgage or housing loan with a maximum of 50% of your accrued benefits or a portion equivalent to the market value of the house, whichever is lower.
